Urban Safe Project (Newport)
Our youth-focused project based in Newport for ethnic minority young people aged 11-25
Supported by:
What is it?
Funded by Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner’s Police Community Fund, our Urban Safe Project (USP) supports ethnic minority young people in Newport aged 11-25, by providing safe, culturally accessible spaces for them to access trusted workers to speak to and positive activities to take part in. USP builds on our existing work in Newport established over the last 6 years.
The project would help young people in Newport be safer, healthier, more informed, and develop positive relationships with their communities and local service providers. The project offers:
Weekly youth drop-in sessions
Regular one-to-one mentoring sessions
Fortnightly information workshops
Regular trips and activities.
USP is delivered by 3 project workers and takes place in Pillgwenlly and Maindee areas, where we are currently delivering youth activities at Pillgwenlly recreational area and Maindee School.
The project aims to work with schools, community groups and criminal justice agencies in Newport, and to offer regular information workshops in partnership with organisations involved in crime prevention. These workshops will provide a positive environment for young people to engage with organisations, to become confident and develop a sense of belonging, and to be inspired by role models in their community.
Young people can be referred by a partner agency or self-refer to the project.
