Refugees Contribute is a 3 year project funded by Lloyds Foundation which engages refugees and asylum seekers in volunteering. Asylum-seekers in the UK are not allowed to work while waiting for a decision on their asylum claim, and those who are granted refugee status lack UK based work experience. Now in its second year, the project has successfully engaged over 50 volunteers to volunteer over 5000 hours of positive contributions to the community during its first year. The project is led by a volunteer coordinator who ensures the effective recruitment, induction, training and supervision of the volunteers.
The project offers valuable volunteering experience within a professional work environment giving the volunteers invaluable and transferable work experience which boosts their confidence, communication skills and their employability. By volunteering in a range of roles from reception desk volunteering, to client support and interpretation, volunteers get to use their own unique skills and experience to help others in a similar situation. Full training, induction and supervision is offered to volunteers and expenses are fully reimbursed. EYST holds the Investors in Volunteers quality mark.
We work closely with volunteering organisations including SCVS, WCVA, and others in order to recruit, train and supervise volunteers following best practice guidelines. We also work closely with other refugee and asylum-seeker support organisations in Swansea, as well as with the wider third sector.
